The Great Outdoors

Working on tummy time outside

Remember summers as a kid? Waking up, getting dressed, eating a quick breakfast, and then meeting your friends OUTSIDE??? Those were the days. When you'd go outside at 9:00 in the morning and go back home when the street lights came on. Children were most definitely getting their 2 hours of American Academy of Pediatrics recommended active play per day. But what about now?

A study conducted by Tandon, Saelens, and Christakis (March 2015, American Academy of Pediatrics) looked at active play opportunities in pre-school. They found that the children were only getting 48 minutes of active play on average. They concluded that children are far more active when they are outside.

Outside play is also beneficial for infants and toddlers, as well as adults. The outdoors are a playground for the senses. Let baby feel the warm sun on his face, look at the rainbow of flowers, listen to the birds singing, and smell the freshly cut grass (and maybe even roll in it). Mother nature provides us with so many learning opportunities. Don't let those go to waste - take baby outside and bask in the beauty.

Enjoying his "toys with a purpose" in the fresh air.

Moving your baby's playtime outdoors has never been easier. The Our First Year backpack is lightweight and portable. You can easily take it to the park or your own backyard and use the toys and activity cards with your baby, while enjoying some fresh air. The nesting cups are perfect for collecting leaves and other "souvenirs" (just be sure to supervise baby, as they can become quite curious with new objects). Put baby on his tummy and watch how he lifts himself up and turns his head to the novel sights and sounds. The soft blocks are fun to stack on the grass; have baby watch as they topple over on the uneven terrain.

For more ideas on how to use the "toys with a purpose" in the Our First Year backpack, please refer to the activity cards. Enjoy meaningful playtime with your baby outside...it's all in the bag!
